Analytical Services Laboratory
The Analytical Services Laboratory (ASL) gives the business community managed access to the university's scientific resources. Offering modern quality management and excellent facilities, ASL provides industry partners with chemical analysis services that include all forms of molecular spectroscopy, liquid and gas chromatography, analytical method development, physical testing and specialist consultancy. It is a UKAS accredited laboratory.
The chemical analysis of rocks and sediments. When applied to oilfield drill cuttings, the information supplied by ASL enables oil companies to characterise what they are drilling through thereby enhancing petroleum recovery.
Working with biofuels
The ASL has widened its scope beyond soil analysis and is now heavily involved in the rapidly developing area of biofuels.
Recently it has been working on a project looking at establishing a process for the high-yield production of biodiesel from oil seed rape. Sponsored by SEEDA and with 12 different industrial partners, the laboratory's role has been to provide analytical input.
Specifications for bio-diesel, which is then mixed with mineral diesel, are extremely stringent and if they are not met the oil companies will not accept it - hence the importance of ASL's analysis work.
ASL's ability to work in a troubleshooting capacity gives it a significant advantage over commercial laboratories. It can add value by helping companies understand the processes involved - and help them overcome any obstacles they may be facing - rather than simply offering a straightforward sample analysis service.
ASL operates within a modern quality management framework and is accredited to ISO 17025:2005.
