Working with some of the biggest names in the pharmaceutical industry, we are an internationally recognised centre of excellence in pre-formulation and formulation science.
Conducting pioneering research into the development and analysis of drugs, we have some of the country's leading experts in polymer, colloid and formulation chemistry, excipient characterisation and drug stability.
Our relationships go way beyond the traditional interface between academia and industry. We develop new techniques that facilitate new approaches to drug formulation and analysis, and we transfer technological advances from university into industry.
We have attracted £2.4 million of funding and have secured research, training and consultancy contracts with government and industry. Our research work is supported by some of the world's leading pharmaceutical organisations, including Pfizer, the Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council, GlaxoSmithKline, AstraZeneca, ICI, Johnson & Johnson, Vanguard Medica, Roche and Phase Separations.
Educational-industrial crossover scheme
Our strong and long-standing industrial collaboration with Pfizer has led to the creation of this innovative crossover scheme. Here, 10 post-doctoral research fellows, employed by Medway Sciences, work at Pfizer's R&D laboratories.
- Using microgels to prepare intelligent active-release delivery systems that can control the release of an incorporated active ingredient onto a wound.
- Research to understand the transition between forms to minimise the over-milling of articles and powders that can impact on the rates of dissolution and bioavailability.
- Using computer models and computational analysis to determine why some transdermally-delivered medicinal compounds are better able to cross the skin barrier than others.
