Medway scientist watches the world

A1658---Remote-sensing-honourA scientist at the University of Greenwich at Medway has been honoured for his work in GIS and Remote Sensing – the technologies that watch the world from satellites and planes.

Fakhar Khalid has been elected to the council of the Remote Sensing & Photogrammetry Society, which will give him a voice in the policies and developments of the discipline.

Khalid, from the university’s Centre for GIS and Remote Sensing says: “The earth has been monitored from above for decades, but as technology advances, remote sensing is helping scientists understand our planet, its dynamics and inhabitants, better than ever before.

“This is a prestigious position which gives me an excellent opportunity to advertise the enthusiasm and expertise available in the university, as well as to work alongside world-leading experts.”

Remote sensing uses sensors at a distance to observe target objects and has a wide array of applications from monitoring environmental change and natural disasters to mineral exploration and military surveillance. GIS, short for geographic information system, is the software that manages and displays the information.

The centre has researchers working on projects from assessing land use in Kent and natural vegetation change in Spain to river pollution from mine waste in Greenland.
