University of Greenwich rowers win Medway boat races

A1832-Greenwich-rowers-win-Medway-boat-racesThe University of Greenwich was triumphant in the Universities at Medway Boat Race, which took place on Saturday, May 15 over a 2.6km (1.6 mile) course from Cuxton, to the west of the M2 Bridge, to the Rochester Esplanade.

The University of Greenwich defeated the University of Kent and Canterbury Christ Church University in the women’s fours, with Canterbury taking second place in a photo finish. Greenwich was also successful over the University of Kent in the men’s eight.

The event was organised by Universities at Medway Students' Association (UMSA), which represents all students at the shared Medway campus. The rowers are trained by the Medway Towns Rowing Club which also manages the race itself and sponsored by Rochester Bridge Trust and Southern Water.

Howard Goodbourn, Southern Water's finance director, says: "Southern Water congratulates all the student rowers who took part in the 2010 Universities at Medway Boat Race. We look forward to being involved in this fantastic event for many years to come. Although our sponsored boat Southern Belle rowed by the Kent men's team didn't win this year it is great to know that she will be helping to showcase the rowing talents of the students on the River Medway and across the country throughout the season. We hope our customers in Medway will continue to support the event and make it even bigger and better next year."

Russell Race, Rochester Bridge Trust's Bridge Warden, says: "The students that took part in the races deserve both congratulations for their efforts and thanks for making it such a great day. The Rochester Bridge Trust has supported the Universities at Medway Boat Race for a number of years and it is wonderful that it continues to attract so much interest from the local community."

Claire Dicker, Student Activities Development Co-ordinator at UMSA says: "The student rowers, who have been training hard eight months supervised by Medway Rowing Club, performed magnificently. We are also extremely grateful to both the Rochester Bridge Trust for sponsoring the medals and to Southern Water, which bought a boat for use by the Universities at Medway Rowing Club."

The winners were awarded trophies and medals created by Medway artist Paula Groves. The Medway Boat Race was established in 2007. Spectators were entertained with jazz music provided by the Medway Universities' Big Band.
