University donates gym machines to young sports enthusiasts
A £150,000 refurbishment programme at the University of Greenwich at Medway gym has provided an unexpected boost for sports enthusiasts at a Kent school and a leading rugby club.
The university has donated redundant weight training machines to Tunbridge Wells Grammar School for Boys and Gravesend Rugby Football Club.
Iain Metters, Sports and Recreation Manager for the University of Greenwich, says: “We are in the second year of a major upgrade at our gym in the Sports Hall at our Medway Campus.
“The gym is open to all students and staff at the Medway Campus as well as local residents and is very popular.
“We are currently upgrading our strength training machines and we are delighted to have been able to support sports development programmes at the school and the rugby club.”
Tunbridge Wells Grammar School for Boys will be making good use of the chest press, shoulder press, leg extension and leg curl machines. Meanwhile, players at Gravesend Rugby Club will be taking advantage of two further leg machines and a Lat (Latissimus dorsi) pulldown machine.
Keith Downing, Head of Physical Education at Tunbridge Wells Grammar School for Boys, says: “This has provided an incredible boost to our school. Until now we have had no weight training equipment at all. From September, our GCSE, A-level and AS-level sports students will be able to include weight training in their options.
“We have a very strong reputation for sport at the school and to date this has been achieved with very little equipment. All our students and our sports teams will benefit tremendously from the additional facilities we can now make available to them.”
