Open evening on course to train new teachers
People considering taking up a career teaching in a secondary school are invited to a special open evening at the University of Greenwich on Wednesday, July 7, to find out more about the training opportunities now available.
The university’s School of Education will be opening its doors at the Avery Hill Campus to showcase its Postgraduate/Professional Certificates in Education (PGCE) courses for secondary school teaching in a range of subjects including science, maths, music, ICT, design and technology.
Visitors will also be able to find out more about the school’s two and three-year undergraduate courses in secondary design and technology teaching.
The evening will include opportunities to talk to subject leaders and current students alongside a comprehensive introduction to applying for courses and the financial support available for students starting this September.
There will be tours of the school’s facilities and opportunities to explore the campus.
“The School of Education has a very high employment success rates for its graduates,” says Rachel Ashton, the school’s Marketing, Recruitment and Resources Manager.
“Many of our students have actually been offered jobs before they have completed their postgraduate teacher training, particularly in the high-demand subjects such as science, maths and ICT.
“Course applicants for PGCEs need to have a first degree in a relevant subject. While some have recently completed their first degree, many others are leaving careers in other fields including industry, science, IT, banking and accountancy to take up secondary teaching.
“They are often looking for more job satisfaction, more job security and improving their job prospects. There is no doubt that teaching is very rewarding and teachers can really make a difference to young people’s lives. Employment prospects are also excellent in many areas as there is a national shortage of suitably qualified people.”
The PGCE courses run for 36 weeks of which 24 weeks are spent working in school placements arranged by the University of Greenwich.
Visitors to the open evening, which is being held from 5pm to 8pm, should go to the Mansion Site reception at the Avery Hill Campus, Bexley Road, Eltham.
