Staff and students from University of Greenwich complete charity run

A1864-London-10k-runners-PRThree students and four members of staff representing the University of Greenwich campuses of Greenwich, Avery Hill and Medway, ran the Asics British 10 kilometre run in London.

Raising as much money as they could for the university’s Alumni Fund was the aim of the staff and students who took part.

The runners were: Sharon Perera from the Kent & Medway Lifelong Learning Network; Paul Saxton, a marine engineering technology student; Helen Jordon, a nursing student; Amanda Jukes, a history student; Yvette Fofah, International Office staff; Claire Evenden, Senior Student Finance Manager; and Neil Garrod, Deputy Vice-Chancellor.

Despite the hot weather conditions, Amanda Jukes, Neil Garrod and Helen Jordon finished in an impressive sub-50 minute time. All of the university’s representatives completed the 10 kilometres.

The runners have exceeded their collective sponsorship target of £3,000 and are on course to reach their individual targets.

Every penny raised will go to the Alumni Fund which helps students in serious financial hardship, pays for books and resources in the library; and provides specialist equipment and support for those with a disability and dyslexia.

The run took place on Sunday, July 11. The route started at Hyde Park Corner and finished on Whitehall, just past the entrance of 10 Downing Street.

Sharon Perera says: “I am so pleased I volunteered to do the run as doing a good deed and putting yourself out for the benefit of others is a reward in itself, but in doing so you double, even treble, the rewards in the feeling of well-being and sense of achievement you get back from it.

“I teamed up with Paul Saxton the student representing Medway and we ran together. There were times I thought about stopping to walk, but because we were running together it was easier to stay running. We managed to finish together, so I’m really grateful for Paul’s support.”

All sponsorship monies received will be increased by 50% at no cost to the donor due to the government’s matched funding scheme. For example, a £10 donation means the Alumni Fund would receive £15.

There is still time to sponsor any of the university’s runners. Visit: www.backgreenwich.org.uk or www.gre.ac.uk/donate to make a donation. Alternatively, cheques can be made payable to ‘University of Greenwich’ and sent to: Victoria Noden, Alumni & Development Office, University of Greenwich, Park Row, London SE10 9LS.

The University of Greenwich’s Alumni Office is the main point of contact between former students and the university.

More than 250 staff and students entered a draw to win a place on the team in a joint initiative with the university’s Alumni & Development department and the Students’ Union.

A total of 25,000 people took part in the run, all raising money for various charitable causes.
