Staff and students raise money for good cause
Raising as much money as they can for the University of Greenwich’s Alumni Fund is the aim of staff and students taking part in a 10 kilometre run.
Sharon Perera from the Kent & Medway Lifelong Learning Network and Paul Saxton, a marine engineering technology student from the university’s Medway Campus, will be donning their running shoes for the Asics British 10k London Run.
The run ties in with Universities Week (June 14-20), which is designed to let the public know about higher education’s often unsung and unheard success stories.
The money raised will go to the Alumni Fund which helps students in serious financial hardship, pays for books and resources in the library; and provides specialist equipment and support for those with a disability and dyslexia.
The runners are hoping to exceed a sponsorship target of £3,000.
More than 250 staff and students entered a draw to win a place on the team in a joint initiative with the university’s Alumni & Development department and the Students’ Union.
The run takes place on Sunday, July 11 at 9.35am. The route starts at Hyde Park Corner and finishes on Whitehall, just past the entrance of 10 Downing Street.
Sharon Perera says: “I think it is important to support the university’s Alumni Fund as it fosters a spirit of caring for our students, which creates a culture of owning and belonging. I’m looking forward to the race and hope to raise as much money as I can for this worthwhile cause.”
All donations received will be increased by 50% at no cost to the donor due to the government’s matched funding scheme. For example, a £10 donation would mean the Alumni Fund would receive £15.
