Centre for Sport and Exercise Sciences

A healthier future for employees and athletes alike

We are all aware of the importance of physical fitness. But how fit are we really? Do we have high blood pressure? Do we know how much fat (cholesterol) is in our blood? And how many working days have you or your business lost due to ill health or stress-related problems? Whether you are an employer, an individual or a professional athlete, we can offer you a range of services that can answer all these questions and more.

Services to teams, businesses and individuals

Offering excellent facilities and unrivalled expertise, we are highly regarded by many organisations, coaches and national governing bodies. We work in collaboration with the Metropolitan Police, Medway Council and Age Concern to improve health and fitness. And we help to improve the performance of athletes, working with British Gymnastics, British Judo Association, Handcycling Association UK and amateurs and professionals in sports that range from football, golf and boxing to swimming and track and field.

Services we can offer you, your team or business include:

  • Help and advice with dietary and exercise requirements.
  • Anthropometry - measuring body shape, composition and flexibility.
  • Assessment of strength and (core) conditioning with provision of training programmes.
  • Detection of anaerobic threshold and associated training recommendations.
  • Blood profiling including haematology and lipid profiles.
  • Assessment of anaerobic power (sprint) capacity.
  • Determination of aerobic power capacity (endurance, sport-specific VO2 max testing).
  • Assessment of isokinetic and isometric muscular power, strength and endurance.
  • Markers of immune function in response to exercise.
  • 2D and 3D analysis of movement and muscle activation.
  • Sport-specific field testing.

Our ongoing research projects

  • Biomechanics and modelling of golf performance.
  • Biomechanics of the pole vault.
  • Physiology and biomechanics of upper-body exercise in relation to disabled handcycling.
